SUSAMIELLE and ROCCOCO are Neapolitan Christmas cookies. They are traditionally made starting on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and enjoyed throughout the holiday season, ending with Epiphany on January 6.
They're made with a combination of flour, almonds, filberts, sugar, butter, honey, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel. The dough is shaped into sticks which are then twisted into the letter S and O. There then egg washed, before being baked until golden.
These cookies are often sold along with mustaccioli and struffoli at street stands during the festive Christmas season. It's recommended to dunk them in coffee, limoncello, Prosecco or a glass of sweet dessert wine.
Stop in at Rispoli's in Hawthorne and enjoy one with a cup of our delicious coffee!
